Buildings Insurance
A home insurance quote can really be divided into two parts - buildings and contents cover.
Buildings insurance covers the structure and fixtures of your home, everything else is included under the contents policy.
There’s a fairly standard range of cover included by virtually all the major insurers such as fire, flooding, subsidence etc.
Of arguably greater interest are the range of exclusions to the buildings insurance policy. For instance, does your home insurance quote include cover for garden ornaments, sheds and outbuilding?
Things to remember about buildings insurance:-
- Its the homeowners responsibility to notify the insurer of any changes in circumstance such as whether you work from home or whether you are considering building work
- Keep the home in a good state of repair; poor maintenance can invalidate a claim
- Some events may not be covered if the insurer can argue that they occured prior to the start of the policy, eg wet or dry rot
- If your property is left unoccupied for a specified number of days it may have no insurance cover at all; check the policy document carefully
Whatever level of buildings insurance is decided upon, it must first and foremost cover the total cost of rebuilding your home. After that consider what extras are being offered - for example additional legal cover or the provision of alternative accommodation.
